VVS Laxman to Lead India on Zimbabwe Tour and Asian Games as BCCI Splits Coaching Responsibilities
India's congested international cricket schedule has led the BCCI to appoint VVS Laxman as head coach for the Zimbabwe tour and the Asian Games, while Gautam Gambhir remains with the senior national team for the home series against the West Indies. Experienced coaches Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sunil Joshi will join the support staff for both assignments.
The decision comes as the schedule of the Asian Games overlaps with the opening phase of India's home series against the West Indies. As a result, regular head coach Gautam Gambhir will remain in India with the senior national team, while Laxman will travel with separate Indian squads for the Zimbabwe tour and the Asian Games in Japan. The upcoming edition of the Asian Games will be held in Japan.
Laxman will be supported by an experienced coaching staff throughout both assignments. Former India batter Hrishikesh Kanitkar has been appointed as the batting coach, while former India spinner Sunil Joshi will serve as the bowling coach. The coaching group will work with Team India across both tours to ensure continuity in preparation and performance.
This arrangement is not new for the BCCI. Whenever India's international schedule becomes exceptionally demanding and two series are held simultaneously, the board has consistently relied on experienced coaches from the Centre of Excellence. Laxman has previously served as India's head coach on several overseas tours when the regular senior coaching staff was engaged with the main national team. Before him, previous heads of the National Cricket Academy also performed similar responsibilities during scheduling conflicts.
The latest decision reflects the growing demands of modern international cricket, where India's expanding bilateral commitments and participation in multi-sport events increasingly require the BCCI to deploy parallel coaching structures to manage overlapping assignments effectively.
